From 1982 to 2007, Nigerian basic schooling produced an entire generation without a single classroom hour on the Constitution, the citizen, or the Republic. That gap was named by the Federal Government itself — a "yawning gap in citizenship consciousness," in the words of the NERDC. Civic Education was finally reintroduced in 2007. Classroom implementation only began in 2014.
That is not the citizen's fault. That is a debt the Republic owes its people. And until that debt is paid, every other conversation about accountability is a conversation we are having with one hand tied behind our back.
Which means this: every Nigerian over the age of twenty-five today went through basic education without being taught the document that governs their life daily.
